Until recently, only Atlantida was capable of producing musical comedies aka Carnaval films, which correspond more or less to their American counterpart. In 1952, Moacyr Fenelon directed “Tudo Azul” for Cinedistri which changed the situation, and now, “É fogo na roupa”, released by Unida Filmes shows that the Brazilian musical comedy genre is not the monopoly of any single producer.
Directed by Watson Macedo, author of slightly better films like “Carnaval no fogo” and “Aviso aos Navegantes”, in which Oscarito plays the best scenes. 'É fogo na roupa' though has a better technique and its plot is better structured. The musical numbers fit together more naturally and the direction is more confident. The plot was written by Watson Macedo himself and it deserves praise for there is a certain logic in the narrative of the events.
In terms of acting Adelaide Chiozzo comes up on top, followed by Heloisa Helena. Bené Nunes is still insecure; Ankito is good, but imitates Oscarito too much; Violeta Ferraz is excellent, confirming the superiority of the female element in the film. Photography by Edgar Brasil, as always, is excessively lit.
